(STUDIES ON THE REFORMERS OR MODERN SOCIALISTS) These essays were first published in the Revue des Deux Mondes to whose editorial staff Reybaud had belonged since 1836. He was born in Marseilles in 1799 and died in Paris in 1878. Reybaud was elected member of the Academy of the Moral Sciences in 1850, but he withdrew from political discussions after the coup d'etat of Louis Napoleon. The first description of this important work treats Saint-Simon, Charles Fourier, Robert Owen and Auguste Comte. In the second volume Reybaud examines society and socialism, communist ideas and sects, which include Harrington's Oceana, Morelly's Code de la Nature, Buonarotti's Conspiration Pour l'Egalite and Cabet's Voyage en Icarie. He also discusses the utilitarian school and the Mormons. The work is virtually encyclopedic. It gave Reybaud's contemporaries an impressive idea of the wide range of the aspirations for social reform. French Text Two Volumes. in One
