In 1844, one of the Royal Geographical Society smedals was conferred on M. A dolph Erman ;and in pronouncing that adjudication, the President of the Society, Sir Roderick I mpey Murchison, used the following words: I have already said more than enough to convince any one who has not studied the works of M. Erman, that the council has most wisely selected him to be the receiver of our patrons medal; and there can, indeed, exist no doubt that, with the exception of the great Humboldt himself, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to find a single man in the broad field of explorers, not already honoured with our medal, who is more richly deserving of it. It is no mean compliment to be even compared with Humboldt; but in truth our authors narrative acquires new interest and value when placed by the side of that of his distinguished fellow-countryman, inasmuch as it presents to view a counterpart and indispensable supplement to the account of the equinoctial regions of A merica, in a philosophical survey of the coldest quarter of the earth, and of a portion of the Old World too, whence many a European nation may trace its origin.
