In this poem on every-day I rish affairs (a new and difficult, and for more than one reason a ticklish literary experiment), all readers who know I reland will certainly see a good deal of truth, not taken up at second-hand; though on many points of opinion they are sure to differ from the writer, and from each other. It is free from personalities, and neither of an orange nora green complexion; hut it is I rish in phraseology, character, and local colour, with as little use as might he of a corrupt dialect, and with no deference at all to the stage traditions of Paddyism.
