A history of Ireland in the eighteenth century
Description:
William Edward Hartpole Lecky (1838--1903), Irish historian and essayist, gained fame in his lifetime for his works History of Rationalism (1865) and History of European Morals (1869), both accepted as acute and suggestive commentaries. His most ambitious work, however, was the History of England during the Eighteenth Century (1878--90). It is the lucid work of a great historian, and its last chapters were separately published in a new edition as the History of Ireland in the Eighteenth Century. Lecky uses extensive authorities and maintains a rare judicial impartiality with a view to refuting the calumnies of J. A. Froude against the Irish people. Lecky’s impressive history goes beyond the rebellion of 1798 and the legislative Union of 1800 to describe the eventful beginnings of Irish history in the new century. As such it remains an essential work.--niversally considered a great and balanced historical account --out of print and essential to all Irish historians --best of many revised editions
