Lost Leviathan: Whales and Whaling

A classic on the subject of whaling written by F.D. Ommanney an acknowledged expert with more than eight books in print. Mr. Ommanney spent years studying subject and working as a whaling inspector, on whalers and at whaling stations and in biological labs in South Georgia, in the Antarctic, in Durban Natal, the Seychelles, Zanzibar, Singapore and Hong Kong. Many have written on the subject, but none with the vast amount of experience this author brings to the possibility of extinction of the species that are whaled. He gives a complete history of whaling comparing the early years with present day explosive harpoons, fast ships, and modern sonar giving the whale no chance. He ends the book with a discussion of conserving the stocks before the great whales are made extinct. It is written with style and grace, yet making his points movingly and convincingly. A must have book for those who study whales and whaling.
