From his father and grand father he inherited a large fortune, and this he augmented by various successful financial ventures, becoming one of the rich est men in New York. For many years he was engaged in the importation of hardware and plate glass. He was one of those who founded the Chemical Bank on the single principle of hon esty, and that institution has never failed to pay its obligations in gold, and during the Civil war redeemed its notes at one time at $280 in greenbacks. He introduced in business the principle of giving no notes. Mr. Roosevelt married Margaret Barnhill, of Pennsylvania and of scotch-irish ancestry.
