About the Author\nJiu-Hwa Upshur received her B.A. at the University of Sydney in Australia and Ph.D. in history at the University of Michigan. She is the author of two catalogs on Chinese art and many articles on Chinese history and has lived and traveled extensively in China, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia. She is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th edition, 1994) and co-editor of LIVES AND TIMES: READINGS IN WORLD HISTORY (1994). Since 1993 she has been a member of the world history committee of the College Board.\nJames P. Holoka received his B.A. from the University of Rochester, his M.A. from SUNY, Binghamton, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, where he was a Rackham Prize Fellow. He has taught Greek and Latin, classical humanities, and ancient history since 1974; he received a teaching excellence award in 1980 and a scholarly recognition award in 1991. He is a published translator and the author of three textbooks and over sixty scholarly articles and reviews in such journals as American Historical Review, Classical World, Classical and Modern Literature, and Transactions of the American Philological Association.
