Description:
A look back at what seems more innocent, even nicer times by a 1937 Notre Dame grad. The author came from Kentucky and developed a lifelong attachment to the school. This book is special in that those familiar with Notre Dame will know and understand the people the author writes about. Some had a reputation which extended beyond the school itself, but others were great teachers who spent their entire lives on campus. He remembers them with great love and detail and brings the time between the World Wars alive with a winsomeness that makes one wonder if these were indeed halycon days. However, he is careful to be clear and objective, so sentiment never degenerates into schmaltz. The concern he has for the school's intellectual life gives this memoir a character often lacking in others of the genre. Well-written and bighearted, this book will be great for Notre Darners, but there is much in it for others as well. Not an in-depth analysis of the school, but a touching portrait of Americana and one of America's legendary universities. - Source: Kirkus Review
