A Textbook of Family Medicine is a greatly expanded successor to McWhinney's acclaimed An Introduction to Family Medicine (Oxford University Press, 1978). It includes a wealth of new information on the nature of family medicine and on specific clinical problems. Chapters have been added on the experience of illness, suffering and healing; doctor-patient communication; and the philosophical and scientific basis of family medicine. The central chapter of the text deals with the clinical method in family medicine. Readers will also find full consideration of prevention, with up-to-date recommendations, as well as revised and expanded material on the family. Five new chapters give students and practitioners needed information on such common complaints as sore throat, headache, and fatigue, and chronic problems such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
