To fully comprehend the peaceful Canada of today it is necessary to investigate the government and political struggles of the past. Canada was a vast, untamed land, with few large communities and a divided population. Ruled from afar, the early inhabitants struggled to find their political voice and vision. In Rebellions, we explore the social, economic, cultural and political make-up of the scattered British colonies. We note the various colonial groups and the division of the society into ins and outs. We investigate the major issues of the day that demanded government action and resolution. The colonists struggled with the task of government and change. Some chose rebellion, some urged revolution, but most preferred reform. The decisions made in the pre-confederation period clearly established Canada’s model of evolution over revolution.
