In the 1920s, Elder George Albert Smith had a vision that a temple on the East Bay hills would be a beacon to the whole area. When President David O. McKay announced that the Oakland Temple would be built, he declared, We feel that the time has come when these prophecies should be fulfilled. During the dedication service, then Elder Gordon B. Hinckley stated: This temple is not only a thing of beauty and of joy to those who see it. It is a living expression of a testimony.</p>
