Contains a March 1998 series of 14 lectures that considered how recent advances in DNA technology, most notably polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based technology, have impacted concepts and applications in ecology and evolution. Opening chapters review how frequency data can be analyzed using a phylogenetic approach, and the relative merits of conventional and coalescent approaches to describing population structure and gene flow. The use of variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) as molecular markers is also described. Later chapters deal with the reconstruction of mating and dispersal processes in natural and experimental plant populations, the analysis of highly mobile pelagic fishes, natural selection and hybridization, among other topics.
