<p>This textbook gives an introduction to and a description of the historical development of plate heat exchangers (PHE). Various types of PHEs and their application areas are discussed. Limitations and opportunities are clearly demonstrated. Analysis of the thermal and hydraulic performance is presented and various correlations based on experimental investigations are provided. Two-phase situations, particularly condensation and evaporation, are covered, Practical issues like fouling and gasketing materials are discussed. Modern methods for experimental and computational investigations are reviewed. Research needs are discussed.</p>
