The pioneering artists of the post–World War II era embraced artistic freedom and gesture-based styles, nontraditional materials and countercultural references. French art critic Michel Tapié even declared the existence of “un art autre” (art of another kind)--an art that entailed a radical break with all traditional notions of order and composition, in a movement toward something wholly “other.” This catalogue accompanies the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum exhibition Art of Another Kind: International Abstraction and the Guggenheim, 1949–1960, which especially highlights works that entered into the collection during the tenure of then-director James Johnson Sweeney. Robert Motherwell: Early Collages, published to accompany an exhibition devoted exclusively to Motherwell’s works on paper from the 1940s and early 1950s, reexamines the origins of the artist’s style and his revelatory encounter with the papier collé technique that he described in 1944 as “the greatest of our discoveries.” Motherwell’s enthusiasm for and dedication to the collage medium for the remainder of his career sets him apart from other artists of his generation and extended beyond the mere physical presence of pasted cut-and-torn papers. Featuring approximately 60 works and four essays that delve into artists’ engagements with collage in the first half of the twentieth century, Motherwell’s early career with patron Peggy Guggenheim, underlying humanitarian themes during World War II and the artist’s materials, Early Collages provides a vital reassessment of Motherwell’s work in the collage medium. Robert Motherwell (1915–1991) studied painting at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, at Stanford, Harvard and Columbia. His first solo show was presented at the Raymond Duncan Gallery in Paris in 1939. In 1941, Motherwell traveled to Mexico with Roberto Matta. After returning to New York, his circle came to include William Baziotes, Willem de Kooning, Hans Hofmann and Jackson Pollock. In 1944, Motherwell became editor of the Documents of Modern Art series of books, and participated in Fourteen Americans at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946. The artist subsequently taught and lectured throughout the United States. A retrospective of his works organized by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, traveled throughout the United States from 1983 to 1985.

Published to accompany a major retrospective exhibition--the first in the United States in more than 35 years and the most comprehensive ever mounted--this title showcases the pioneering work of Italian artist Alberto Burri (1915-95). Exploring the beauty and complexity of Burri's process-based works, the exhibition positions the artist as a central and singular protagonist of postwar art. Burri is best known for his series of Sacchi (sacks) made of stitched and patched remnants of torn burlap bags, often combined with fragments of discarded clothing. Far less familiar to American audiences are his other series, which this exhibition represents in depth: Catrami (tars), Gobbi (hunchbacks), Muffe (molds), Bianchi (whites), Legni (woods), Ferri (irons), Combustioni plastiche (plastic combustions), Cretti and Cellotex works. Burri's work both demolished and reconfigured the Western pictorial tradition, while reconceptualizing modernist collage. Using unconventional materials, he moved beyond the painted surfaces and markmaking of American Abstract Expressionism and European Art Informel. Burri's unprecedented approaches to manipulating humble substances--and his abject picture-objects--also profoundly influenced Arte Povera, Neo-Dada and Process art. Alberto Burri was born in Italy in 1915. He first garnered attention in the US in the early 1950s when his work was included in the group exhibition Younger European Painters at the Guggenheim Museum and was also shown at the Frumkin Gallery, Chicago, and at the Stable Gallery, New York. In 1977 a retrospective was presented at the University of California's Frederick S. Wight Gallery, Los Angeles, and traveled to the Marion Koogler McNay Art Institute, San Antonio, Texas, and the Guggenheim Museum (1978). He died in Nice, France, in 1995.
