The story of the Hopkins-Strickland families and their friends has all the elements of a book that you won't want to put down: romance, as young men and women were vying for each other's affections; boys going off to fight in WWI; the Spanish Influenza pandemic; undisguised adoration by one woman for another; use of local vernacular and colloquialisms of the day; a look at the culture &amp; day to day lives of a rural community during that time. The final letter in the collection, written on February 14, 1920, provides a wonderfully romantic ending. Part 1 of the book gives historical background on WWI, Spanish Influenza, life in rural North Carolina, and an introduction to the people and places that appear in the letters; the letters, about 100 in total, are transcribed in Part 2. This book has truly captured a part of North Carolina history in a unique and poignant way; the following excerpts were taken from a few of the letters in the book: Well Maude, I reckon you are chopping cotton these days, are you not? Was sorry to hear that Ollie was leaving for France. Heard today we boys were going over soon. Hope you won't forget me when I get over in the strange countrys. Als hope you won't get married before I get back, if I ever do. We have had the Flu ansy [influenza]. It is the worse thing that ever hit me. But listen my dear girl, my mind is with you all the time and heart all so [also], don't you see, for it true in my heart.</p>
