<p>This book contains contributions by 27 authors bringing together ecologically and chemically orientated information on the interactions between plants and the animals that consume them. Part 1 deals with ecological and evolutionary processes and includes chapters on the evolution of plant chemical defense against herbivores; the distribution of secondary compounds within plants; the mechanism of plant avoidance of autotoxicity by secondary metabolites, especially by non-protein amino acids; plant resources for chemical defense; and new horizons in the biology of plant defenses. Part 2, the chemical participants, contains chapters on naturally occurring toxic non-protein amino acids, cyanide, and cyanogenic glucosides, the evolutionary ecology of alkaloids, toxic seed lipids, the chemistry and biological effects of glucosinolates, sesquiterpene lactones and other terpenoids, saponins, phytohaemagglutinins and lignins, and insect hormones and antihormones in plants.</p>
