Recent technological advances have radically altered the parameters of the urban field: trade takes place on a universal scale, work is immaterial and telematic, and new modes of communication influence the development of social relations. The city is the topographical area where these changes occur in their most concentrated form, where the conflicts and tensions accruing from them are most clearly articulated, where pixel and concrete are bound at every level. No longer a material place defined by geographical and architectural boundaries, the city of today is constituted by experiences, by lifestyles and attitudes, by leisure and consumption, by faces and conversations, and by media. Texts and projects by urban designers, artists, and writers, including Archined and V2_lab, Knowbotic Research, Scott Lash, Bart Lootsma, and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, chart groundbreaking ways of thinking about the new city.

The archive has of late proven to be a powerful metaphor: history is viewed as an archive of facts from which one can draw at will; our bodies have become a genetic archive since being digitally opened up in the human genome project; our language is an archive of meanings that can be unlocked using philological tools; and the unconscious is an archive of the traumatic experiences that mold our identity. More and more artists and architects are developing software systems in which data is automatically organized into complex knowledge systems, a process in which the user is only one of the determining factors. Databases, software and archives increasingly form the inspiration for artistic interventions. <i>Art&amp;D</i> considers changes in art practice due to media, to that new branch of art making known primarily as electronic art. Use of radio and video came first, about 25 years ago, but over the last ten years digital media and network technology have reigned. This new discipline embraces a heterogeneous collection of artistic, technological, and scientific disciplines and is also characterized by inter- and trans-disciplinary collaborations. Electronic art proved a troublesome fit for existing art institutions, necessitating the founding of specialized organizations for the funding and creation of relatively expensive, process-based projects. And they were: digital art laboratories were established around the world with the financial support of governments, arts foundations, industry, scientific programs, and so on. <i>Art&amp;D</i> is a critical consideration of the many artistic, technical and theoretical aspects of making electronic art in such interdisciplinary collaborations. It sets out to describe, in layman's terms, the cultural, social, and political-economic transformations that are the result of the widespread propagation of digital techniques.
