This is a new edition, now in paperback, of a book which is written jointly by a philosopher, physician and a psychiatrist. As medicine advances more questions arise about the "quality of life" and the distribution of scarce and costly forms of medical and surgical treatment. Doctors can no longer be content to save life and ease pain without considering the wider implications of what they are doing. This work is an introduction to this debate about values in medicine.
